I live in the U.S. I know I can get a Visa to Laos or Nepal from here. I want to goto Thailand and then travel to Laos. The Visa to Thailand is incredibly easy, just get it on the plane or airport. To travel from Thailand to Laos do I need a special Visa or is the Visa I get from the U.S. to Laos good enough? The thing that makes this complicated is that I'm not planning on traveling directly to Laos from the U.S. I'm planning on travelling to Laos from Thailand. Not sure if the rules change or not. No GP you are wrong. Ivan G was able to correctly assume I was a US Citizen, which I am, born and bred. Also, you didn't bother to give an answer regardless of whether or not I was a US citizen. Thumbs down for your answer since you didn't bother to give an answer, just more questions.

Your visa is good for travel to Laos even if you are coming from Thailand. Great question, though. I recall that back in the 80s or 90s there were a few countries that were very skittish about entering their country from an "unfriendly" 3rd country.

GP is not wrong - it IS important. It is your citizenship that determines whether or not you need a visa for any particular country, not where you live. However, you already know that you need a visa for Laos so you're right, that's not really your question. To answer the question, once you have a visa for Laos it doesn't matter where you enter Laos from. In relation to any country, a visa gives you entry clearance to enter the country and doesn't relate to entering it from any particular place. This is generally true of all visas - if you have to apply for it in advance, you have to apply for it in the place where you live and you don't have to specify at which place you want to enter the country. Actually the State Department says that Laotian visas can be obtained on entry to Laos at certain ports of entry - see here http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_946.html
