THE 40 HOUR FAMINE WHAT IS IT? The 40 Hour Famine is a helpline for kids in poor countries. People go without food or something else that is important to them for 40 hours. WHERE IS IT HELD? The 40 Hour Famine can be held anywhere! It is usually held at the group leader’s house. WHEN DID IT START? It was started in 1975 in response to the famine in Ethiopia. WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO? This year the 40 Hour Famine is supporting Laos. Laos is one of the world’s poorest countries. One in three people in Laos live on less than $2.50 a day. The money raise will also go to East Timor, southern Africa and for families in need. WHEN IS IT? Friday 17- Sunday 19 August 2007 HOW CAN YOU HELP? You can help by being a part of a group or just donating! Remember- Ever $40 dollars raised helps feed and care for 8 kids for a whole month! HOW MUCH WAS RAISED LAST YEAR? Over 5 Million Dollars! ABOUT LAOS One of the worlds last communist states. Laos has a population of 6 million. Most of who don’t have access to clean water, Doctors, School and Electricity. Half the population of Laos’s does not have access to safe drinking water. Only 5% of all Laos’s children complete high school. RULES 1.If you're 12 and under you must NOT skip food for more than eight hours. 2.Drink plenty of water, mineral water, fruit juice or tea. (We recommend you don't drink coffee as it can make you dehydrated.) 3.You can have ANY energy sweet, like a barley sugar, every four hours. 4.Doctors warn that going without food could be harmful if you're pregnant, recently had surgery, have a history of diabetes, gastric or duodenal ulcers, heart conditions or kidney complaints. Ask your doctor for advice. Remember, if going without food isn't on, you can go without something else that's important to you. 5.When you finish the Famine, don't rush off to raid the fridge straight away. . Ease your way back to normal eating by having something light and healthy like fruit or a salad. 6.World Vision cannot accept any responsibility for any injury or illness that may arise from involvement in the 40 Hour Famine. WHAT YOU COULD GO WITHOUT The 40 Hour Famine’s not just about food! You can choose what you go without on the Famine Weekend. What’s important is that you’re giving up something that matters to you. Some suggestions: •Food Famine. No food for 40 hours (eight hours if you’re 12 or under). •Turn Off Technology. No phone, mobile, SMS, TV, radio, computer – nothing electronic. •Furniture Famine. No furniture – not even a chair or a bed – so you have to sit and sleep on the floor. •Come up with your own ideas. Be creative! What about poor kids in AMERICA? Did you forget all about them? Folks are so concerned about people in other countries, they forget about our own! An American child will die because his family has no health insurance, but we will bring kids from another country and fix what ever ails them!
