These countries themselves are referred to as socialist republics, not communist, in their own constitutions. They are defined by a form of government in which the state operates under a one-party system and declares allegiance to the ideology of Marxism-Leninism. In accordance with Marxism-Leninism, the constitutions of these countries claim that all power belongs to the working class, that a democratic dictatorship of the proletariat has been implemented within their borders, and that they are building socialism, with the goal of achieving communism one day. Current Socialist Countries include - China, Cuba, North Korea, Laos & Vietnam. France is a unitary semi-presidential republic with strong democratic traditions. French politics are characterised by two politically opposed groupings: one left-wing, centred around the French Socialist Party, and the other right-wing, centred previously around the Rassemblement pour la République (RPR) and now its successor the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP). Look what else is illegal in France "“offences against public decency†(contraires aux bonnes mœurs) or breach of the peace (trouble à l'ordre public) have been used to repress public expressions of homosexuality" I'm sorry I'm cracking up, my point to this question is that so many people "THINK" they want to live in a socialist society but really have no clue what that means. As for Sweden it is a Social Democracy - NOT a Socialist society. Heh guys stop beating me up I'm completely AGAINST Socialist Societies Period!

well, sweden is awfully socialist. they have a really high quality of life, great life expectancy, and high satisfaction levels. seems awesome to me. edit: "socialist society" can very easily mean socialist democracy. you're just using a silly definition that only includes communist countries.

OK, so out of the list of countries that you named, can you name me one where they have achieved their goal of all power belonging to the working class? Can you name me one that doesn't have over 80% of its population living in abject poverty that would make the "lower class" Americans look like wealthy jet-setters? Can you name me one that doesn't have a government that is not mired in greed and corruption? Those who would like to see socialism employed here in the U.S. believe (mistakenly) that socialism/communism hasn't worked elsewhere because they didn't have the right people setting it up and running it. We need to look no further than the former Soviet Union to see that socialist societies DO NOT WORK. Any economic system that does not provide appropriate rewards to those who work harder, develop new products and technologies, and find better and more cost-efficient ways of doing things is doomed to stagnation and ultimately to failure. You can't fight human nature -- we're all selfish to a certain degree, and if you force people to sacrifice for the so-called "good" of others you'll eventually get people who will either (a) work only as hard as the laziest person in the factory, or (b) start a bloody revolution. Here's a great idea: Why not avoid the whole situation and keep the U.S. the way it is, with more emphasis on reward based on effort and individual responsibility?

It depends *which kind* of socialist society. I support libertarian socialism, but not state socialism, which tends to become totalitarian state capitalism. China, Cuba, North Korea, Laos & Vietnam have different forms of state capitalism. Not socialism. "Socialism is the belief that the next important step in progress is a change in man’s environment of an economic character that shall include the abolition of every privilege whereby the holder of wealth acquires an anti-social power to compel tribute." - Ben Tucker http://fair-use.org/benjamin-tucker/instead-of-a-book/armies-that-overlap For many supporters of socialism, "socialism" means that the workers control the means of production, while "capitalism" means another class controls the means of production. Historically, supporters of socialism have varied from opponents of the state (like Proudhon or Bakunin) to supporters of it (like Engels), as well as from supporters of completely free markets (like Proudhon or Tucker) to supporters of planned economies (like Marx) to supporters of free access to common means of production (like Kropotkin). These are generally divided into libertarian socialism (anarchism) and state socialism (Marxism, Fabianism, etc.). http://porkupineblog.blogspot.com/2006/05/myth-of-socialism-as-statism.html Now things get complicated because some people (e.g. Marxists and Misesians, taking opposite sides) have identified centrally planned economies with "socialism" and free-market economies with "capitalism." Anarchism and similar ideas would be a third category, "syndicalism," in the Misesian classification.
