I've been rearing lepidoptera in captivity (in the US) and am thinking about rearing specimens from Asia. I do not have a license or anything. I have relatives in Laos who are willing to mail me live specimens such as eggs and hosts but I'm not sure if this is legal. And if so, how long does it take? I'm going to rear them and sell specimens. I'm pretty sure it's legal to rear native un-protected butterflies...

i would go adn talk to your post office. Secondly, i think you have to be licensed or a shop to be able to getr those kind of things.

You have to have a license in your current business of rearing animals. You are already committing crime. It's also illegal to mail live specimens overseas or domestically without a permit from federal trade commission and pass insections based on various environmental laws. You cannot use USPS. You also have to hire a custom's broker to import the items when they land here.

if your thinking about shipping them from overseas, you should call the 1800 go fedex , because they ship and do all the necessary international paperwork for you. And if you need any additional paperwork, they know exactly what youll need. Each country has specific laws on goods being imported and exported especially anything live. And fedex knows them ALL....because if you dont have all the required paperwork on whatever your bringing to the united states, it will sit in Customs until you get it to them....(too long for your specimens to survive that box)

It is legal as long as they are not protected i have had animals shipped overseas before the biggest part is the expense because you need to get the fastest possible shipping
