Is it similar to rural Laos, and Cambodia? I have only been to Bangkok and Pattaya. How is the economy, standard of living, poverty, etc when compared to other countries and to Bangkok?

nothing is bad as it is in the PH. Rural Thailand is honest and peaceful and prisons in Thailand are cleaner than PH

Suggest you visit Chatturat near Chaiyaphum, Thailand to get a taste of what rural life is in that country. It is very peaceful, with wonderful and honest people who follow Buddhism. Rural Thailand is where you can see the real culture and tradition of those people, unlike in Bangkok and Pattaya which are extremely commercialized and more frequented for prostitution. Food in rural Thailand is the best I've ever tasted of Thai cuisine. It is however much different from rural life in Laos or Cambodia since Thailand is relatively well developed and its people have a higher standard of living, hygiene and food culture.

I don't know if Khon Kaen qualifies as rural or not - the areas outside of the city surely do, though. Khon Kaen (northeastern Thailand) is a nice mid-sized city of about 250,000 with all the modern conveniences you could want. American fast food restaurants, shopping centers, movie theaters, cable & DSL, and a couple of nice 4 and 5-star hotels, the Charoen Thani Princess and the Sifotel, respectively.

Rural Thailand? Please be more specific. There are big differences between life in the Satun and life in Mukdahan and life in Nan. The rural economies in different parts of Thailand have different main components. In general, life in rural Laos is today like how life in the northeast of Thailand was some 25 years ago. The infrastructure and material wealth is much higher in rural Thailand than in Cambodia and Laos.

Hi Chigga, the rural area is definitely big contrast to the city. You may not get modern amenities like the city for sure. In the rural area, family can get by on a few thousands bahts a month, relying on growing their own vegetables and rearing livestock for their food. Most of them will be farmers, and being so far out, electricity and water may be an issue. Many will rely on artisan wells for water and portable generator for power. It should be like in rural Laos and Cambodia also. Though you find that Thais seem more contented with their life than the others. Compare to Bangkok, really no way to compare.
