I was thinking of going in September and doing Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. What's the rain like? I know that sounds like such a dumb question! But it says it's 33cm a month in September (and 28cm in Cambodia) and I can see this makes it the wettest month by far. OK, fine, but I live in England and I've never been anywhere with a "rainy season" before and I have NO idea what this number means in terms of what it will do on a normal day. Does it pour with rain the whole time for days on end, or chuck it down in sheets for an hour and then clear up for the rest of the day, or what? Can you go out in it? Does it mean that you can't travel anywhere or explore the sights because the ground's too wet/muddy? Would it spoil a holiday to the point where I'd be better going somewhere else and leaving this trip until next year sometime? If that's the case, when is the best time to go, taking into account the weather and also how busy it's likely to be with tourists? I plan to travel around and see the temples and jungles and suchlike. Not so bothered about beaches and stuff. Any help or advice you can give me will be much appreciated! As you can see, I'm pretty clueless about it all right now. I want to at least have some idea before I go to the travel agents.

The west coast of England receives the most rainfall (40 inches or about 100 cm) whereas the east coast receives just the half of what the west coasts receives (20 inches or 50 cm). That means the amount of rain in one month in Cambodia is equivalent to half a year's worth of rain in some parts of England. In Southern Vietnam and Cambodia, the wet season is from May to November with June to August registering the highest rainfall figures. December to April tends to be very dry. Temperatures average around 25-30°C all year round with the hottest and most humid period from the end of February to May. The North of Vietnam experiences cool, damp winters between November and April with temperatures in Hanoi falling to around 15°C. The summer months from May to October are hot and dry. A pleasant time to visit is spring (March-April) or autumn (October-December). There are extremes in the Highlands as snow sometimes falls in the winter whilst the summer can see temperatures up around 40ºC. There is the possibility of typhoons between July and November. In both regions of Vietnam, during the rainy season, it rains more often in the afternoon. It's pour for a few hours and the sun would come out again. It's sort of like in Florida in the US.

September is a little wet, but generally it doesn't rain all day. Usually in the early morning then a little at lunch, then at Happy Hour (you should be on a bar stool then anyway!) Travel by plane, bus and boat are not affected much, moto is badly disadvantaged though if that was your plan. Weather is hot in the day but nice and cool other times. I like the rainy season better than dry. Vietnam is really green and even more friendly then. Aloha.
