I am planning on driving my Thai registered jeep to Cambodia early next year then later on driving from Mukdahan , crossing Laos and entering Vietnam I have a Thai international license supposedly good for all ASIEN countries and the proper booklet for the car issued by dep't land and transport. I have read on Thai visa two conflicting stories one saying no cannot drive to Vietnam one saying rubbish. i am sure Cambodia will be no problem for me. I have an Australian passport and live in Thailand

To Laos http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=1772379 You'll need to show purchase/ownership papers and submit photocopies of same. You go to customs in Mukdahan and complete a temporary export of vehicle form http://www.iantaylor.org/tempexport02.jpg. Should be free of charge but hey TIT. They will specify a penalty if you fail to return to Thailand with the car (usually double the book price of the vehicle). I haven't driven across that particular bridge but since it's fairly new there may be a toll. Go to customs on Laos side and do temporary import of vehicle. http://www.iantaylor.org/tempimport02.jpg

I don't know if you can or can't drive your car into Vietnam from Laos, but I would love to come along for the ride, sounds like fun, but remember that you will need a visa in advance to enter Vietnam. Unfortunately I just looked at the Australian Embassy website about driving in Vietnam - http://www.vietnam.embassy.gov.au/hnoi/Driving_in_Vietnam.html and it seems Vietnamese driving licenses are mandatory for all drivers of motor vehicles as well as for riders of motorcycles with a capacity of over 50cc. Non-Vietnamese citizens are only permitted to drive in Vietnam if they hold a temporary Vietnamese driver's license. To convert an Australian driving license or an International Driving Permit into a temporary Vietnamese driver's license, the applicant must first hold a valid Vietnamese residence permit of at least three month's validity and a current Australian driving license or a valid International Driving Permit. Seems like your international license is not good in Vietnam sorry. It still sounds like a great idea if you can pull it off. Good Luck
