Yes, I had one for over two years, in a pretty small jar that couldn't hold much water.

In the wild yes, that is how they live, however, in captivity most people would need to provide a large possibly 2 foot tank to be able to keep the water level low (but still deep enough for the fish to swim) and still provide enough capacity to stop the fish from suffering ammonia burns etc. Betta's survive by breathing the air that we breath but they can still get injured from poor aquarium keeping habits. In the wild bettas will jump from puddle to puddle so that they do not get effected by bad water quality, this is something our captive betta's do not have the ability to do. Hope this helps

Yes, then can, but do they like it, probably not. Bigger is better, then have more room to swim and show off. Those little cups you buy them in are temporary at best. They can breath both in water and in the air. They can survive shallow water as drough dries the rice pattys, then when it rains again they swim just like other fish. (think of a pet dog...you could have one stay alive in a small crate for a long time, but they would certainly be happier in a big yard!)

yes they can live in little water, although so can we and we would be miserable! they are hardy fish but it's certainly not a good idea. depends on what you mean by low. rice patties in thailand are very wide but more shallow (although shallow could mean several feet still), which is ok for them because they breathe air from the top instead of getting oxygen from the water itself. they need space to swim so a tank that's a 10 gallon long instead of tall is more preferred although i would give them at least a foot length and height to swim around in. hope that helps!
