Live in Laos

Live in Laos?
Does foreigner allow to buy a property (land and house) in Laos? IF so, where is the best location and roughly how much?? Do you know any good real estate in Laos with web sites??? What about the safety issue? is it safe to walk at night with, let say, 2 girls in Vientiane?

I wish I knew more about the private property issue. Laos is a communist country so I do not know if that limits who can buy property, especially foreigners. I have been to Laos before, particularly Vientiane and found it absolutely amazing. It was safe, quiet, and clean. Vientiane is not like the other Southeast Asian capitals that seem at first chaotic and unorderly. Vientiane is very peaceful and I found it safe to walk at night. Like with any place, just use your best judgement and common sense. Just because it is safe to walk at night does not necessarily mean it is adviseable at times you know. But I hope you enjoy your Laos experience!

Vientiane is safe. It's getting more modern these days. I liked it a lot more back from before the Vietnamese government co-financed an upgrade of the city's roads as well as a promenade along the river bank. Foreigners are not allowed to own land. The authorities can grant long-term leases. Leaseholds can be transferred (sold) if they have been correctly registered. The legal system in Lao PDR is ... how to put it ... evolving. You may or may not be able to enforce your legal rights against local counterparties. Caveat emptor applies.
