I would suggest you forget the calling cards, most of them have terrible call quality. Instead, I would recommend either Yahoo Messenger w/Voice or Skype, both are VOIP, calls placed through your computer, either to land lines, mobile phones or to other computers. Calls placed to other computers are free anywhere in the world, and calls placed to phones are around $.05 depending on where you're calling. I live in Thailand and have cut my phone bill from about $75.00 a month down to about $2.00 a month and talk for hours. It's actually pretty easy to set up and the call quality is better than a phone. You may need to purchase a microphone or internet headset, and deposit $25.00 or so into an account, but that's basically all it costs. I couldn't live without it theses days.
