My supposed home country is Laos. From what I know(which is based on traditions and guesses btw), Laos may be a split of dangerous to safe place to go. If you visit, only go to it's cities. They have small cities or towns that may be regulated by police(I'm not positive out the law in Laos). Places in which there are police, should be safe. However, I also think that Laos has many small towns, villages or farm lands that may be unregulated completely(I don't know this for sure either). Those places are not. Anyways, I somewhat plan to go there myself someday as it's my home country. I live in the U.S. and know some traditions, religions and movies etc.about Laos. Although, what the hell do I know! I was born in the U.S!

I visited Luang Prabang last June as an individual tourist for 2 days. It looked lovely, clean and perfectly safe.

I've been to Laos of a number of times. Like any country in Asia, if you stick to the tourists trail you'll be fine. The people are friendly and accomodating. However, out of the view of tourists, the country is completley different. As a nation Laos is very poor. With a high population and a underdeveloped economy. Most of the country live in slums and make shift shacks across the country. Crime rates are high, but no more than in the UK. In General Laos is a wonderful country full of oppertunites and adventure. If you went I would guarentee you'd be safe and face no problems. Just remember, respect the locals how you'd like to respected yourself, manners go a long way.

Well I suppose you can do the whole tourist thing and visit but I won't advocate living there. It's a lawless place with nothing but shameful poverty.
